FATAL WAIHI FIRE
DEATH FROM SUFFOCATION An inquest was held in Waihi on Sunday relating to the death of Mr. Thomas Edmund Midgley, whose body was found by the fire brigade on being called to suppress an outbreak of fire at deceased’s home. Dr. T. G. Shortt said that he was called to the scene of the fire about half-an-hour after the alarm had been given, but deceased was then beyond medical aid. He judged that death liad taken place about half-an-hour or an hour previously. A post-mortem examination revealed the fact that death had been caused by asphyxiation and the burns on arms, legs and abdomen had probably taken place after death. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence. The funeral took place later in the day at Waihi cemetery after a service in St. James’s Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Midgley had been organist for over 15 years. Canon Wayne and the Rev. McFarlane officiated at the graveside. There was also a short masonic service.
