MOTORISTS CELEBRATE

GREAT SOUTH HIGHWAY PROCESSION AND GYMKHANA Several hundred gaily beflagged motor-cars, comprising a procession a mile in length, journeyed along the Great South Road to Papakura on Saturday afternoon, celebrating the transformation of what was once an impassable clay track into a splendid example of modern highway construction. In the course of the last few years the local bodies along he Great South Road have laid in it concrete all the way to Papakura at a total cost of £159,000, and the outing on Saturday was organised by the Auckland Automobile Association in celebration of the completion of the work. Shortly after 2 o’clock the leading car, driven by Dr. J. Howard La wry, the president of the association broke a white ribbon stretched across the road at the Harp of Erin, and the long procession of cars followed him, gathering speed as the open country was reached.

In the lead were officials of the Auckland Automobile Association accompanied by several local-body representatives, and the procession was greeted along the route by groups of children and adults. At Manurewa members of the Town Board and local residents stood by the roadside to express official recognition of the occasion, and at Papakura the chairman and members of the Town Board took the lead and headed the long line of cars through the town to the railway reserve where a motor gymkhana was held. Several games and competitions were provided for lady members of the association, giving them an opportunity of demonstrating their driving skill. At the conclusion of the programme, prizes were presented by Dr. Lawry.

Results were as follows: Apple Picking.—Miss Worrall, 1; Miss Selby, 2.

Egg and Spoon Race.—Miss Selby, 1; Miss Worrall, 2. Peg Picking.—Miss Worrall, 1; Mrs. Jordan, 2.

Fancy Driving.—Miss Selby, 1; Miss Worrall, 2. The only event for men was an egg and spoon race, won by Mr. H. C. Curiett, Mr. G. Smith being second.
