ORPHANS’ CHRISTMAS
WIRELESS SETS AND TOYS SHOP ASSISTANTS’ EFFORT Wireless sets, in addition to the yearly Christmas gifts of toys, were presented to several Auckland orphanages by members of the Auckland Retail Shop Assistants’ Orphans’ Christmas Gift Fund Club, on Saturday afternoon, when the annual visit was begun. A procession of motor-cars bearing toys of all sorts, headed by Father Christmas, called first at the Mount Albert Methodist Orphanage. Here the children were welcomed by Father Christmas, who presented them with a three-valve wireless set as well as a host of toys. Preparations had already been made for the immediate connecting up of the set and later the children heard a Christmas message coming from the air. Wireless sets and toys w'ere also left at the Children’s Home, Richmond Road, and the Grange Home. A happy innovation was the presence of Guides Rangi and Eva from Rotorua, who delighted the children with poi dances. The babies at the Karitane Home were given rattles and other trinkets beloved of the little folk. During the year the club raised over £7OO from dances and subscriptions. Over £ 300 has already been sent to charitable institutions and most of the balance has been expended on toys and wireless sets for the orphans. This week the club will visit several other orphanages and a wireless set will be given to each.
