Time-Payment System Attacked
EASY CREDIT FOR GIRLS MAJOR GORDON’S CRITICISM • <r piME payment among girls of the present day is appalling,” said Major Annie Gordon, female probation officer, at the Police Court to-day. She made this observation during the hearing of a case against Vera | Grace Hall, aged 21. who pleaded j guilty to a charge of attempting to obtain £lO by false pretences. Chief-Detective Cummings said the girl had written to the Railway Department demanding £lO for a gramophone which she alleged had been checked. “She purchased the machine on the time-payment system,” said Major Gordon. “It is terrible the way those girls are allowed to incur debts without ever being able to pay them. Something should be done about it.” The Chief*Detective said that accused took possession of the machine in 1925, and had paid only 30s. The girl was placed on probation for two years.
