GOLDFIELD’S JUBILEE

ALLOCATION OF FUNDS A long discussion took place at the last meeting of the borough council regarding a letter from the Diamond Jubilee Committee, which has a surplus fund for the purpose of commemorating the goldfields diamond jubilee. The letter took the form of a request to the council for the right to make a play area for children in the vacant sections near the Thames South railway station; also, that if the Gas Company leased a section for the purpose, would the council be prepared to remit the rates, amounting to £25 a year, for the section. The latter request was refused on the grounds that the land applied for by the Jubilee Committee was 14 acres, and in the opinion of the council this was sufficient for a play area.
