GOLDFIELD’S PIONEER

LATE MR. RALPH PENNELL Another early pioneer of the goldfields, Mr. Ralph Pennell, died on Wednesday at the home of his youngest daughter, Mrs. W. E. Roberts, Waihi, at the age of 84. Born at Pakuranga, near Ho wick, Mr. Pennell was the third son of Mr. Thomas Pennell, one of the first settlers in the district, and one of a family of 17, 16 of whom were sons. After serving in the Maori War in the neighbourhood of the Waikato Heads, Mr Pennell joined in the gold rush to Thames, where he lived until ISS2, when he went to Karangahake. His wife died while h? was there and he later moved to Waihi. where he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Roberts. Mr. Pennell is survived by two sons and seven daughters. There are 50 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchil-dren. The interment took place at Paeroa on Thursday.
