New Zealand Title Aspirants draw for championships

(Special to THE SUN by

“WAYFARER)

WELLINGTON, To-aav. THE draw for the New Zealand Championship Tennis Meeting to commence on Boxing Day at Christchurch, took place last evening. Compared with last year’s entries there is an increase all round, with the one exception of the hoys’ singles, in which there are the same number.

ritHß increase is mainly accounted for 1 by the large number of Canterbury entrants, the tigures being as follow (1927 entries first in each event): Men’s championship, 64, 56. Indies’ championship, 32, 23. Men’s doubles, 31. 27. Ladies’ doubles, 19, 14. Mixed doubles, 31, 29. Boys, 13, 13. Girls, 14, 13. By a strange coincidence both the men’s and ladies' singles are an even draw, necessitating no byes. CHAMPIONS’ POSITIONS In the men’s singles there are many Christchurch men fighting out the first round with club mates, but this was inevitable with the large number of local aspirants. Geoff Ollivier’s name, for the third year in succession, came first out of the draw and he should have no difficulty in disposing of Boddy in the first round. He will meet either McDougall (Otago) or A. B. Loughnan (Canterbury) in the third round, and will then encounter Don France, who lias an easy run. W. L. Lampe (Wanganui) will, as ho always does, fight to the last against Noel Wilson, the young Wellingtonian, who, chiefly on account of the evil weather, has not struck form. N. Sturt, I. Seay, C. Angas, and L. G. iCnott* are all in this quarter, as well as J. C. Peacock, who with Laurtnson has been given what appears to be a complimentary seeding, so that anyone might meet the winner of the two cracks in the first half. Edgar Bartleet heads the top of the lower half and meets P. G. Greenwood (Canterbury), who will, I think, thereby qualify as an entrant fpr the plate. Malfroy should later meet B. B. Loughnan or Johnny Walker, the winner to right it out with Bartleet, A. L. France’s rirst game is against Tait, the other seeded player in that quarter being Paterson (Christchurch) and Jimmy Laurenson, so that anything might happen there. Further, I am not at present prepared to go. WOMEN’S EVENTS Despite the presence of May Speirs, who also drew number one, the ladies* is an open event. Misses Speirs, Tracy (Wellington), Marjorie MacFarlane and M. Pattison (Otago), being in the top half and Mrs. R. P. Adams, who as Miss Arita Howe, won last year. Mrs. Melody, Miss Knight and Miss Wake, in the lower portion. lam not gu -ssing on this until I have seen Marjorie MacFarlane in action after her trip abroad. The men’s doubles should produce some fine fighting, two new pairs being Bartleet and Laurenson, and Malfroy and Lampe, who is now approaching the veteran stage. One notes with regret that the Wallace—Dickie combination is defunct, Alec Wallace being paired with Jack Parker, of Wellington, and if Parker can only strike form these two may make some of us think a bit, but they will know ;ne:r fate when they meet Bartleet and Laurenson in the second round. Peacock, who must be counted out in the ngles as too slow, with Wilson, should know what’s coming to them when they strike Geoff. Ollivier and Seay in the same round. Knott and Sturt should live long enough to encounter the Frances, who will probably. nay almost certainly, blow out Malfroy r.nd Lampe. AUCKLAND’S CHANCE As to the ladies* doubles, any old thing might happen, but Wellington and Auckland should bo near the/finding couples unless Miss Partridge and Miss May Speirs get busy and put «»ut Miss Marjorie Macfarlane and Mii<s Beryl Knight, the latter of whom is a notoriously slow starter. As usual the mixed have got me guessing, but nobody seems likep to upset the seeded pairs. Miss Pattison and Mcnougall, number one. Miss Tracy and Wilson nine. Miss B. Knight and Knott, Miss Speirs and Don France. Mrs. Adams and Len France. and Miss Macfarlane and Sturt, unless it be Miss Wake and the übiquitous K. J. walker in the lower half. With the good entries and the courts in fine condition, it only needs fine weather 'or a successful meeting. Most of the girl entrants are from (-hristchtirch. or more properly Canterbury, tho boys’ entries coming from as far afield as Wanganui, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington and Canterbury.
