TEAM FOR OLYMPIC GAMES
THE RAISING OF FUNDS ROWING EIGHT CONSIDERED At the annual meeting of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Olympic Council held last evening, Mr. E. A. Craig presiding, correspondence was received from the Olympic Council approving the rules of the Auckland branch. It was pointed out that the Council’s first aim was to raise £7,000 as soon a*- possible. It was considered that this amount was necessary to enable the best available team of athletes, thoroughly representative of every brunch of amateur sport, to be sent to Amsterdam for the Olympic Games next year. The second objective was to raise a further sum of £20,000, to form the basis of a capital investment fund, which would enable the fostering of Olympic ideals in the Dominion. A letter was received from the Auckland Sports Club stating that its members were prepared to assist financially. Mr. G. Hennan, a member of the yew ‘Zealand Council, gave an interesting address on the Olympic movement. and passed complimentary remarks on the ability of previous New Zealand representatives. He said that already several names had been submitted to the inter-national council. Rowing, however, had a great claim for consideration. Mr. Hennan was of the opinion that a New Zealand eight was now in a position to hold its own against the best eight in the world. The following officers were elected: Patron, the Mayor. Mr. G. Baildon; vice-patron. Mr. H. Ft. Mackenzie; treasurer, Mr. A. T. Davies; secretary, pro tem.. Mr. T. G. Wilks; president, Mr. G. Henning. . It was decided to appoint each chairman of all affiliated bodies vice-presi-fients of the Auckland centre.
