Fields Will Be Big at Te Awamutu
Rehearsals for Rich Ellerslie Events
CONSIDERABLE interest will be manifested in the annual meeting- of the Waipa Racing- Club at Te Awamutu tomorrow, on account of the fact that a considerable number of horses will be seen out prior to their being saddled up for their more important engagements at Ellerslie in the near future.
THE course is reported to be in first--1 - class order and the racing should be excellent. The first event is timed to commence at 11.45 a.m.. A special train leaves Auckland for the course at 6.15 a.m. to-morrow. The first race is the 11.45. PIRONGIA HANDICAP HURDLES Of £110; li miles.
Ten is the number left in the 2.45.PATERAN G 1 HANDICAP
Highflown ..98 Toddy .... 9 0 Uralla .... 9 3 Seventeen is a fine field, if quality is not outstanding, and included are some newcomers to this branch of the racing game. HIGHFLOWN showed promise at Taumarunui recently and' he may be better backed than LORD STAR and LADY CINTRA. The second item is the 12.30-
The top weight should be suited by a race of this kind, but he will have to improve on his recent form. Awarere is in great fettle, while others in Flying Juliet, King Smock, New Moon, Archeen, Te Koroke, Berinthia and Miss Potoa are forward enough to make a good race of it with those near the top. AWARERE and FLYING JULIET may be found carrying most money. There will be the usual big crowd lined up for the non-winners’ race, the 1.15.WAIPA PLATE Of £100; 6 fur.; welght-for-age.
Taken all round they are an indifferent lot, even for this class of race. Micrometer, Taku Tama and Lord Abbey have shown some pace, but there are two that rather stand out, and they are the three-year-old CARLARIS and the two-year-old MAURIAENA. The former displayed considerable pace, but little stamina, in the two-year-old races at Te Rapa last autumn, being second each day, while Mauriaena, a full sister to Auriculus, showed speed at Te Rapa and Takapuna lately. After the poor lot seen In the above race the field will come out for the 2.0. TE AWAMUTU CUP HANDICAP Of £300; l.i miles.
The mere fact that so many Auckland Cup horses are engaged makes it a tricky event for backers to hope to sum up. Suffice it to say that if these are to have a show in the big Ellerslie event they must show up here. Doubtless, however, the lightweights will set such a merry pafe that the more fancied candidates will be run off their feet over the first part, and bearing this in mind three that will come in for a lot of support from backers may be MOSAIC, KING LU and PHAOLA.
On recent running it is difficult to go beyond QUIN COM A and WAR OFFICER, and with a run this pair will go close to justifying the confidence reposed in them by their supporters. At the time of writing no less than 28 figure in the hack seven, in which a division is unnecessary. Here they are: 3.30.ORAKAU HACK HANDICAP Of £110; 7 furlongs Abbey Day . 9 5 Flying Waltzer ... 9 3 Tresses ..77
There are at least half a dozen quite useful performers that cou fc be sorted out without exhausting the list of probables. These may be Waltzer, Abbey Day (with her 161 b penalty), Orchus, Auriculus, Taurimu and Flitter, but beyond them the field is a weak one. No doubt WALTZER and ORCHUS will carry the money. Another trap is the 4.15.FLYING HANDICAP Of £150; 6 furlongs
Nine of the above are also in the big sprint at Ellerslie ten days hence, and therefore their efforts will be closely followed. All the fancied division are near the top to-morrow, and they should also be near the top of their form. It looks as if tho well backed lot will come from near the top, with backers expressing a preference for PAGANELLI, NANCY LEE and AUSSIE. What will be a most interesting fixture will be concluded with the 5.0.OHAUPO HANDICAP
Of this eleven no less than seven are engaged in previous races, so the running earlier in the day will not be without its information for the close reader of the racing. Kept for this event, however, both MOSAIC and DAY GUARD, or in their absence HIPO, will come in for big support. A. Driscoll is to ride Phaola to-mor-row, and H. Dulieu will be on Bracken Abbey and Viburnum. IT. Wiggins rides Papatu, War Officer, King Arch, Abbey Day and Roman Abbey.
