“EARLY BIRD.”
ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT “Anxious.” —The jockey you mention has not ridden at Ellerslie since the summer meeting of 1918. Auckland’s Big Day The summer meeting of the Auckland Racing Club will open at Ellerslie on Monday week, Boxing Day. The acceptances and final payments will be made at 5 o'clock this afternoon, and they will be published in THE SUN at about 5.20 p.m. An Early Start Aucklanders desiring to participate in the Walpa meeting at Te Awamutu to-morrow will require to be up early, for the special race train leaves the city station at 6.15 a.m.. and Newmarket eight minutes later. The train leaves from the course after the last race on its return, being due in the city at 10.23 p.m. Waipa on the Air With so many first-class performers engaged at the Waipa meeting at Te Awamutu to-morrow considerable interest is being taken in the fixture. A review of the programme, together with a list of the acceptances for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap (due this afternoon) will be broadcast from IYA between 7 and 8 o’clock this evening. Money Order’s Good Prospects There is little doubt that the Paper Money gelding Money Order is a brilliant sprinter when right, and his recent showings down South naggest that he is in great fettle just now. With Money Order now known to be a certain starter in the Railway Handicap on Boxing Day, he must be added to the list of possibles for that event, and such a speedy beginner must be given a royal chance. Equal to the Best Possessing an intimate knowledge of the Wanganui course and training tracks, the writer ventures to express the opinion that Lysander’s gallop there yesterday morning, when he went six furlongs in 1.13 2-5, is one of the best sprint trials ever seen. A few months back Civility registered a tick slower with a light-weight up, and she won several races after that, so that with a knowledge of what Lysander was capable of in his prime one must give the Absurd horse a big show in the Railway Handicap. Incidentally, Lysander has never been seen at his best since he dead-heated with Commendation at Ellerslie 15 months ago. That was the struggle that affected him, but apparently he is now coming back. The Big Double While it is confidently expected that the seven horses at the top of the weights will survive this afternoon’s acceptance for the Auckland Cup, there is every likelihood of a big weeding out of those near the top in the Railway Handicap, which will leave Aussie at the head of the list. Then there may be a gap down to Lysander. At a quick run over this morning there are indications that the field for the Auckland Cup after acceptance time to-day will number about 22. and in the Railway Handicap about 30. However, with the acceptances this afternoon we shall soon see what is left. In connection with the Railway Handicap, the fact that there is a sweepstake of lOsov each for starters should be the means of obviating the necessity of running it in divisions. Te Aroha’s Loss By tho death of their secretary, Mr. A. W. Edwards, both the Te Aroha Jockey and Trotting Clubs have suffered a severe loss. The deceased was it most zealous and popular ollicer of these two sporting bodies, and their progress of recent years was in a large measure due to his energy and enterprise, backed up by efficient committees. One of the pleasures of sporting excursions to Te Aroha meetings for many years was the renewing of acquaintance with Mr. A. W. Edwards, and his untimely demise has made a vacancy that the Te Aroha Jockey and Trotting Clubs will find it difficult to till. Gallops at Hawera Both trial grass and the plough tracks were worked on for galloping on Saturday, and u few visitors wer present. C. Jackson sent Vivo and Benzora four furlongs on the plough, Benzora going like himself and beating Vivo in 50sec. Fermanagh ran three furlongs in 37 1-5, a very pleasing work-out. A gallop of interest was that between Silver Rule, Golden , Flower and Callapat. The two-year-olds, finishing in the above order, ran three furlongs on the grass in 36, Ca. lapat being left at the start. This colt is much overgrown, but diape. exceedingly well. The two-year-olds. Tenacre and. Flanore, were sprinte d on the grass and ran two furlongs in 23 3-5. Black Odin, going nicely, ran three furlongs in 38. Airtight (Morrison) and San Fera (M. Conway) were schooled once round over five fences, both jumping well. Sovena and Killock ran seven furlongs in 1.34. Reremoana, alone, ran four furlongs on the plough in so£. Troilus went alone on the grass over five furlongs In 1.4£. The Lamb and Silent went seven furlongs on the plough in 1.35, Silent showing much improvement. Euphonium and Lady Desmond ran four furlongs in 51 together. Barryander and Pink Rose worked five furlongs in 1.4 1-5. Paitonu trotted a few times j around. Bonogne did steady 'me
Riding at Awapuni J. Barry will not be at Ellerslie on the opening day of the Auckland Cup meeting, but will be at Awapuni. He will be on Kiosk in the Fitzlierbert Handicap, and on the following day he will be on the Tea Tray horse in the classic. Landed a Coup According to information received in Wellington by cable, A. D. Webster brought off a coup at the Ascot pony meeting (Sydney) last week, when he won a race with the Acre—Lady* Moutoa two-year-old gelding. Back to Work Early in the season Mr. E. E. Jolly’s two-year-olds in J. W. Lowe’s stabl. went a bit sore, and they were not persevered with. They are agai- in active commission, and at Trentham on Tuesday morning Salt Petrel and Concentrate 11. ran four furlongs in 53sec. Quantum, in the same stable, recently fell on the bitumen road, but he has recovered from the soreness. and is in work again. Bent on Winning Mr. F Bristol’s Cyntoi mare Bent is to be given another chance to annex the Atiawa Cup at the Taranaki J.C. Christmas meeting and has been allotted an impost of 7.12 in the event to be decided on Boxing Day. Bent carried 7.4 when she beat Royal Mint and Vivo in this event 12 months ago, necks separating the trio. That was the only race she won last season, however, though she was several times placed. At Wanganui on Tuesday morning Bent covered seven furlongs on No. 1 track in 1 3) 4-5, being accompanied ever the last six by Service. AT STRATFORD HANDICAPS ANNOUNCED Press Association. WELLINGTON.
