WAITEMATA COUNTY

STRENUOUS MONTH SIXTY DIFFERENT WORKS Reviewing the progress of the works at the meeting of the Waitemata County Council yesterday, the engineer, Mr. A. Murray, said that last month had been a strenuous one for the staff. Definite arrangements had had to be made for the commencement of about 60 different works throughout the country. On the Huia Waterfront Road the restoration of flood damage was completed, and the road was now in good order, Lincoln Road was in a bad condition, and steps would be taken shortly to repair it. Early next month metalling under grant proposals of a portion of the Whanga-paraoa-Tiri Tiri highway would be started. Construction operations on the main highway in the Pukeatua Riding had been started in earnest, and it was expected to have three miles metalled before February. Arrangements had been made to commence metalling 60 chains of the Silverdale-White Hill Road. The Birkenhead Borough Council had not replied regarding the restoration of Orewa Road, but temporary improvements had been effected. The tender of Mr. A. Turner, of £534, was accepted for the concrete decking of Steven’s Bridge in the Kaukapakapa Riding. The tender of Malino and Company of £512 15s was accepted for the construction of a 6ft. concrete arch culvert in the same riding. As good progress is being made with the construction of the Inga Road bridge over the Wairau estuary at Milford, it is now possible in fine weather to gain access to Castor Bay by way of the route, and the road is expected to be open for traffic shortly. The building inspector reported that 28 permits to the value of £19,187 17s had been issued during the month. It was decided to take steps to form a special loan area for the reconstruction of the Silverdale-Redvale Road, a highway on the East Coast which is impassable in winter, and a poll of ratepayers will be held early in the New Year.
