MAORI CEREMONIES PRESERVED BY KINEMA
UNIQUE RITUAL FILMED THE Dominion Government has just completed an important kinematograph record at Rotorua under the direction of its publiety officer, Mr. A. H. Messenger. For some time past the Government has been anxious to obtain a pictorial record of old Maori customs, such as fire-making, and the different rites formerly practised by the tohungas, or priests. This work has now been finalised at Rotorua. Excellent co-operation was given by the Maoris themselves, who realised the importance of the occasion. Mats were donned by the rangitiras, and the tohungas intoned incantations to half-forgotten gods. A special staff of photographers was in Rotorua for over six weeks recording the ceremonies.
