GARDEN FETE

DIOCESAN HIGH SCHOOL On the lawn of the Diocesan High School yesterday afternoon a garden fete was held to raise funds for new playing fields. ' A laden Christmas tree stood in the centre of the lawn and nicely decorated and well-filled stalls were erected around. Various competitions were aranged. Later the children’s items, which were given at the school concert the previous evening, were repeated, and music was played by the school orchestra.. One of the attractions was an art exhibition, the work of the pupils.

Quito a number of the new day and evening frocks are cut with a variety of yokes, a fashion which assists considerably in tho more facile fitting and shaping of the up-to-date corsage. Thus sports frocks show the square or pointed yoke of the Jumper outlined with openwork stitchery. In the case of silken fabrics; a pipng of another harmonising colour is used. Evening frocks display the transparent yoke, cut low at the back, of plain flesh-coloured chiffon. Picturesque demi-toilettes have yokes and sleeves cut in one, and fashioned of lace or other fragile fabrics. The superlative charm of such models is in their ephemeral lightness and exquisitely fine hand stitching.
