Prizes Presented to Marist Scholars
SACRED HEART COLLEGE FINE ACADEMIC RECORD “The Sacred Heart College Is a powerful broadcasting station, and the Marist Brothers are the announcers of the knowledge of God.** Such was the analogy drawn "by Dr. James Liston, Roman Catholic Coad-jutor-Bishop of Auckland at the annual prize-giving of the Sacred Heart College held last evening in the Town Hall concert chamber. Bishop Liston congratulated the brothers on the results achieved by their college. FINE SCHOLASTIC RECORD The director, Brother Borgia, said that the number on the roll had been 280, made up equally of boarders and day boys. For the first time in the school history the number of secondary pupils had exceeded 200. During the past six years the college had been represented in all public examinations in which secondary school pupils were eligible and in every one of these the results obtained compared favourably with those of any other secondary school in the Dominion.
In the Intermediate and Public Service exams for 1926 44 boys were successful. Out of over 1,100 candidates, James Farrell, a scholar of the college, was first and Joseph Rodgers, came fifth. Two Senior National Scholarships were won by Rupert Cud-den-Large and Maurice Smith respectively.
Junior National Scholarships were won by Bernard Bennett and Frederick Petricievich. Eighteen passes were gained in the Matriculation examinations. In the University Entrance Scholarships examination five passes were secured and a University National Scholarship was won by Rupert Keenan. .
It was gratifying to note that the two university students nominated by the Auckland University Professorial Board for the 1928 Rhodes Scholarship wefre both old boys of the college. COLLEGE CONCERT
An enjoyable programme of vocal, instrumental and elocutionary items was given by pupils of the college. Overtures were rendered by the college orchestra and the boys’ choir was heard in three songs. Vincent McGovern received well-merited applause for his version of Beethoven’s “Fourth Movement,” and “Allegro in A flat Major.”
Items from “The Merchant of Venice” and “Oliver Twist” were well portrayed. lan Graham earned applause for his piano solo “Rustle of Spring.” A song, “The Swallows,” given by Thomas O’Brien, was also well received. F. Moroney’s violin solo, “Londonderry Air,” proved very popular. Following is the list of prizewinners : SPECIAL PRIZES Coolahan Gold Medal, for good conduct: E. Brill.
