DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY ESCAPES TERM BENCH IMPOSES FINE Roy Chatterjes, aged 34, a doctor of philosophy, did not get a good referenoe from Chief-Detec-tive Cummings when he appeared »t tile Police Court to-day for sentence on a charge of stealing three rings valued at £35. Mr. Leslie Adams, who appeared for accused, said that two rings had been recovered, but one was still blissing. For that, the dealer would be satisfied with £25 restitution. Chief-Detective Cummings said that accused's general reputation was far from satisfactory, and since 1926, he bad given his wife only 15s maintenance. The magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, said that there bad been a good deal of carelessness on the part of the dealer and for that reason he did tot feiel like sending Chatterjee to Prison. He was fined £ls, and ordered to Pay the dealer £25, and the pawnbroker £2 ss. The default was fixed at six months’ imprisonment.
