S.M. IN WITNESS BOX
EX-CONSTABLE CHARGED Press Association GISBORNE, Monday. Allegations of forgery and theft of Government moneys were preferred at the Tolaga. Bay Court to-day against James Blakely, formerly constable in charge of the Tolaga Bay district. The case was heard before justices of the peace. Blakely was charged that, being a Government servant, he stole sums of money totalling £l2 3s, and also with altering entries in the criminal records book in respect of fines from £5 to £3, 20s to 10s, £5 to £3, £5 to £2, and £5 to £2. Among the witnesses was Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., who gave evidence that it appeared to him that the amounts of the fines in the record book had been altered, and other figures substituted. The amounts in the book were not ,in his handwriting. The accused was at that time clerk of the court at Tolaga Bay. After further evidence, accused pleaded not guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
