Fading, however, was bad. There are few nights in the middle of every bad season for distant reception when conditions are good. IZB, the local station owned and operated by La Gloria Gramophones, Ltd., has arranged a special Christmas programme for next Monday evening. The station will then close down until Monday, January 23. IZB is on 275 metres and has a power of 50 watts. The same company has erected a station at Christchurch under the call sign of 3ZB, and transmits on Tuesdays, the silent night of 3YA, on a wavelength of 260 metres. It is generally conceded among radio circles that to-day’s test transmission to schools from 2YA is foredoomed to failure. Perhaps the best criterion of the opinion of those who know is the decision of the local station not to relay the programme. Jf a transmission is not sufficiently clear to be rebroadcast, tnen it is certainly not clear enough to be used for instructing children.
