WAIKATO HOSPITAL
NEW WING OPENED (From Our Oxen Correspondent) HAMILTON, To-day. The ceremony of opening the new wing of the Waikato Hospital was performed yesterday by the Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Health. The building approximately cost £IB,OOO. The chairman of the Waikato Hospital Board, Mr. Campbell Johnstone, presided, and associated with him were the Minister, the Director-General of Health, Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, the surgeon-superintendent, Dr. G W. Gower, the lady superintendent, Miss Keddie, Dr. Hugh Douglas and Miss E. M. Roth well. In addressing the large gathering the Minister referred to the growth of the hospital vhich now had accommodation for 300 patients, while there was a staff of 160. In addition, the board controlled five, other institutions in different parts of the district. In 188 S the total year’s levy was £2,165, whereas to-day the levy amounted to over £ 32,000/ The Waikato Board possessed 3.3 beds pet* 1,000 of the district’s population. The Dominion average was 5,5 beds.
