The first Ministerial comment on President Coolidge’s speech to the United States Congress was made by Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, the Home Secretary. Speaking at Twickenham, he said: “I do not complain. I adopt his words as mine, as he decided well within his rights to build what he considers necessary for the people of America. •So it is our duty to do what we consider right without reference to the demands, wishes, or intentions of any other nation of the world. We have got to realise that Utopia is not yet here- —A. and N.Z.-Sun. ELEVATING GUNS Reed. 10.52 a.m. WASHINGTON, Fri. The House adopted a Deficiency Appropriation Bill, carrying expenditure totalling £40,000,000, including £IBB,OOO asked by President Coolidge for the elevation of the guns on the battleships Nevada and Oklahoma. The House stipulated that it approved of the elevation only provided that such does not conflict with the Washington Disarmament Treaty. CHARGE OF INSINCERITY TOKIO, Friday. The Japanese newspapers generally express disappointment that the President of the United States, Mr. Calvin Coolidge, is advocating peace movements while at the same time agreeing to a naval expansion programme. The newspapers charge Mr. Coolidge with insincerity.—A. and N.Z.
