THEFTS IN COUNTRY
TWO STORES ENTERED TOBACCO STOLEN Thieves were busy in the country districts last night. At Wiri the combined post office and general store was broken into and between £7 and £8 worth of tobacco was stolen. At Papatoetoe Mr. Waring’s general store was also entered and a quantity of tobacco stolen. The intruders at Wiri opened a quantity of letters, which were in the post office awaiting delivery and distribution. The combined post office and store at Wiri is controlled by Mr. R. W. Wilson. He does not live on the premises, his residence being about 100 yards away. This morning when Mr. Wilson arrived at his store at 7.40 o’clock he found the door into the post office had been broken open. Letters in the oflice had been broken open and strewn over the floor. Fortunately Mr. Wilson takes the post office money and postal notes home with him every night. , , In the store the intruders had helped themselves to between £7 and £S worth of tobacco, but other goods had not been touched. A number of coppers had been taken front the till. Until recently Mr. Wilson took the tobacco and cigarettes home with him. Mr. Waring’s store, which is situated on the Great South Road, near Papatoetoe, was stripped of its tobacco and cigarette supplies. Two strangers were seen wandering about the district yesterday afternoon and evening. Inquiries are being made by the police.
