Maori Kings Relative is Dead

WELL-KNOWN CHIEFTAINESS ANCESTRY OF. TATA TE TIHIRAHI Tata Te Tihirahi, a chieftainess of high rank, and a near relative of King Te Rata Mahuta, died this week at the Ngaruawahia pa of her cousin, Princess Te Puea. The King and his family are attending the tangi at the historic settlement. Besides having the blood of the Royal tribe —the Xgati-Mahuta—in her veins, Tata was also descended on her mother’s side from the NgatiPaoa, and was therefore also related to the Hauraki tribes. A woman of high standing among her people, Tata was the wife of Hauauni Koinake, of Ngaruawahia. For some time she had lived at Princess Te Puea’s pa, near the township. In years gone by Tata had not infrequently accompanied Te Puea on ceremonial visits to Maoris in other parts of New Zealand. Her grandfather was Te Tihirahi, a distinguished chieftain of his day in the Waikato, who was indirectly responsible for saving the Auckland Maoris from considerable bloodshed at the hands of the redoubtable Tq Rauparaha.
