HARBOUR FERRIES DELAYED BY STEAMER
DIFFICULT MANOEUVRING Four ferry steamers were held up last evening as a result of . the Kaituna manoeuvring between the Prince’s and Queen's Wharves. The Kaituna, which had been discharging cargo at the Prince’s Wharf, left her berth shortly before 8 p.m. Following the usual practice her master canted the vessel slightly into the basin between the Prince’s Wharf and then commenced to back out. All went well until the Kaituna came abreast of the Tongariro. She then swung broadside on owing to the strong current.
To prevent striking this vessel the master of the Kaituna ordered her anchor to be dropped. He then manoeuvred until the vessel swung round. The Kaituna then proceeded to sea. In the meantime four of the harbour ferries had appeared.
Observing the Kaituna’s difficulty, however, they had to keep clear of the basin, and were unable to approach their berths. A delay of 15 minutes for transharbour passengers resulted.
