TEACHERS’ INCOMES

ADDED EARNINGS BY EVENING WORK TECHNICAL BOARD’S INQUIRY Whether or not headmasters and first assistant teachers from other schools should be employed on evening work at the Seddon Memorial Technical College was the subject of discussion at the meeting of the Board of Managers yesterday afternoon. When considering the resignation of a headmaster who had had 28 years’ service, Mr. G. Brownlee expressed the opinion that the complaints of the hardships was greatly exaggerated, that was, if a headmaster, with a salary in the vicinity of £6OO a year, were able to do further work in the evenings. Miss B. Carnachen said many married teachers with families found it necessary to take up additional work in order to live decently. It was the belief of the chairman. Mr. H. S. W. King, that there were few teachers engaged in evening work when it was not necessary for them to do so. If the teachers at present employed carried out their duties satisfactorily it was not the business of the board to interfere. Mr. J. P. McPhail considered that the whole principle was wrong. If a teacher was receiving a decent salary in day employment, he should not be employed by night. It would be a serious penalty for technical schools if the board adopted such a policy, said Mr. G. J. Park, the principal. It would be foolish to lay down a general rule, because it would mean that a teacher with special qualifications for certain work could not be employed as an evening instructor. ... It was decided to obtain a report on the daily occupations of the teachers.
