RUSSELL NOTES
GAY SEASON AHEAD Mr. F. Elliott while fishing from the launch Manaaki landed a king fish weighing 451 b.
Overseas anglers are arriving at the Bay of Islands for the sport of deepsea fishing. The large shoals of fish to be observed in the waters in and around Cape Brett make one venture to express the opinion that there are good prospects for the season. * * * A party of wool buyers will arrive at Otehei Bay on December 23 to try their hand at landing a big game fish. Mr. Howard Heinz and Mr. Flinn, of America, have made reservations for the month of February. Mr. and Mrs. Kimball Salisbury and Mr. Mentund have cabled from Chicago and will spend six weeks deep sea angling in the Bay of Islands. They have booked No. 1 bungalow from the middle of January, and engaged the lauilch Manaaki for that period. They will make their headquarters at Otehei Bay. Mr. Peter Williams, who is having a new and up-to-date fishing launch built in Auckland, is naming the vessel Avalon. Mr. Heinz, of Pittsburgh, has engaged this well-known expert fisherman for the whole of February next. With the increased traffic it has been found that the facilities at the new wharf at Russell will not meet the needs of the many launches which use the landing, and as a number of new launches have been added to the fleet there is congestion. There is no doubt that the harbour board will have to seriously consider the desirability of making additional improvements to the wharf in order to cope with the tourist traffic. Much interest is being evinced in the regatta to be held in Russell on December 29. Entries are coming in freely from all parts of the Dominion, and it is anticipated there will be a great influx of visitors to the Bay of Islands. The Russell Town Board is busily engaged tidying up the Strand, and during the coming holidays this place w ill have a very gay appearance. Arrangements are being made to hold a special service in the old historical church at Christmas, when carols will be sung. Mr. J. Holmes, the well-known taxidermist, of Otehei Bay, has been successful in drawing No. 3 block in the Wapiti district, and will leave for the South Island in March next to indulge in deer stalking.
