The Run of the Games
SUBURBAN MATCH RESULTS Selector Busy To-Morrow DOG eats dog in the suburban senior games on Saturday. The Harbour Board Colts are matched with Harbour Board A, the unlucky Green Lane side meets the equally unfortunate Ellerslie, and Ponsonby has drawn Glen Eden.
OONDITIONS make all the difference
in the world and the form displayed by teams so far this season is no indication of how the competition will go with a few wet days. Then the bowlers will have an opportunity and the batsmen, up against the time limit will suffer a serious handicap. The sloggers will have to temper their temerity and that is not easy to do after three innings under such favourable batting conditions as have ruled. The break in the weather this week suggests that the bowlers’ wickets will happen along one of these Saturdays. THREE ON END Harbour A has the advantage of three wins in line. It has beaten Green Lane, Ellerslie, and Glen Eden and it would be very inconsiderate of the Colts to stop the seniors’ run of victories. But it must be remembered that the Colts have also beaten Ellerslie and have lost to Ponsonby and Glen Eden by the narrow margins of six and 12 runs respectively. The clash as a family affair should provide a good friendly game of cricket. Ellerslie and Green Lane should also make a good afternoon’s sport. Smarting under two defeats, Ellerslie will have to improve its points to vindicate its championship rank and to-morrow, matched with Green Lane, which has the less imposing record of two losses and a draw, it will have a royal chance to improve its position. But the thing is not as simple as it looks for Green Lane is improving day by day. It might well claim to have had a moral victory over Ponsonby last week when it put on 24-0 for seven wickets in its strike and Ponsonby could only retaliate with 215 for nine wickets in an equal time. There is no apologising for Ellerslie’s showing last Saturday. It simply was beaten. But it has the batsmen and Lane will simply have to show the form that has been expected of it. HARD TO PICK Ponsonby has had a loss, a win and a draw and has to face Glen Eden which has had two wins and a loss. There is an interesting game in sight between them. Glen Eden has beaten Green Lane and Ponsonby has drawn with that side under a heavy strain. On the other hand both teams, have beaten Harbour Colts. These results however, are not trustworthy indications of how matches will go. for the vagaries of the game puts any attempt to pick the card on that system well out of court. One noticable feature of the matches last Saturday was the improvement of the fielding taking it as a whole. That was necessary and the fact that the sole selector will be having a prowl round to-morrow will put the triers cn their mettle. For he is a, believer in good fielding and anyone who goes to Wellington will have to win his place by intelligence in the paddock. Two men he is looking for are a leg break bowler and an “express.”
