SECRETARY IN TROUBLE
CHARGES OF THEFT RACING CLUB FUNDS (From Our Oton Correspondent) TE KUITI, Tuesday. Leonard Christian Harton, accountant, of Te Kuiti, appeared before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, on two charges of theft. Firstly, that between February 1, 1925, and February 24, 1927, at Te Kuiti, he did steal the sum of £232 19s 9d, the property of the Te Kuiti Racing Club; secondly, that between August 3. 1925, and August 1, 1927, at Te Kuiti, did receive the sum of £IOO on terms requiring him to pay the same into the Bank of New Zealand, at Te Kuiti, to the credit of Frederick S. Sutton, of Leura, N.S.W., Australia, late of Te Kuiti, stationer, and did fraudulently omit to pay the same, thereby committing theft. On the application of the police, the accused was remandede to appear at Te Kuiti on December 13, at 10 a.m., bail being allowed in accused’s own surety of £SOO, and one approved security of £SOO, or two of £250.
