PASSION FRUIT
NEW EXPORT TRADE EXPERIMENT TO BE MADE The exploration of passion fruit as an experiment will be carried out by the Department of Agriculture this season. As explained by Mr. W. IT. dee, chief orchard inspector in Auckland, at a meeting of the Henderson U ruitgrowers’ Association last evening, from 200 to 300 cases would be purchased if obtainable at a suitable price, and exported on behalf of the department. The shipment would be made under proper experimental conditions, and if it resulted in a loss it would be met by the department, thus serving the function of a guarantee. If, on the other hand, there was a surplus, the growers would receive the benefit oi it. The necessity of growers of all kinds of fruit signing contracts as early as possible, for the export of their fruit, thereby facilitating the allocation of space at Auckland, was strongly stressed by Mr. F. E. Howell. Auckland manager of New Zealand Fruitgrowers. Ho said that at present less than 1,000 cases had. been guaranteed for February shipments, and. generally speaking, shipping contracts were tiehind those of last year, although there seemed little doubt that exports would be greater.
