“THE MESSIAH”
SEASONABLE ORATORIO To the English-speaking race probably no other name among the great tone-poets is more revered than Handel, and of his works probably none so familiar as his famous “Messiah.” By wedding his sublime music to the grand narratives of Holy Writ, he has indeed immortalised his name. Truly a work of great inspiration, “The Messiah” took only 23 days to complete. Written nearly 200 years ago, it is as popular to-day as then. Evidence of this will no doubt be again forthcoming in the attendance at the performance of this oratorio, to be given by the Auckland Choral Society on Thursday, December 15. For this performance an exceptionally fine quartet of soloists have been obtained, including Mr. Ernest McKinlay, the New Zealand tenor, who has just returned from a successful tour abroad. The soprano role will be taken by Miss Naomi Whalley, of Palmerston North, who last appeared in Auckland in the society’s performance of “The Creation,” and the contralto role by Madame Irene Ainsley, who has had extensive oratorio and operatic experience abroad. The bass solo’s will be taken by Mr. Drayton Venables, late of Auckland and now of Whangarei. A strong chorus and orchestra will be under the direction of Mr. Colin Muston.
