FOR THE ZOO

BROWN BEAR AND CRANES HORORATA’S “PASSENGERS” The Hororata, which arrived last evening from England, brought a consignment of animals and birds for the Auckland Zoo. A fine lusty brown bear snarled in his cage and nearby three Crown cranes preened their feathers at the thought of release. There were four originally, but one died on the voyage, a few days before reaching Auckland. The dead bird finished the journey in the freezer. A Kerry blue terrier was also on the vessel, but he is going to a resident of Invercargill. Another dog was also brought out for a private owner. The animals were cared for by the ship’s butcher during the voyage.
