Where Motorists Are Going

Thousand Requests for Itineraries WORK OF THE A.A.A. Anyone with a geographical turn of mind would have an interesting time reading through the requests for itineraries that have been received at the A.A.A. office. Information is sought regarding nearly every road in New Zealand, and the staff is having a busy time drawing up complete itineraries from the outline tour given by the motorist. A leisurely study through a pile of requests reveals the fact that a big number of motorists are planning to do a round trip of the North Island this summer. The most favoured route is through Taranaki, Wanganui, Palmerston North, Napier, Taupo and home again. Very few people want to go down to Wellington from Palmerston North. The roads through the centre of the North Island are receiving attention from touring motorists this season, particularly to the National Park, while a few hardy souls are wanting to explore the route of the new railway from Stratford through ito the Main Trunk. The Bay of Plenty and Gisborne comes in for its usual share of attention. By the way, motorists planning to go through to Poverty Bay would be well advised to include a visit to beautiful Lake Waikaremoana, while the opportunity presents itself. A surprising feature of the inquiries is the fact that people from south of the Auckland Province seem to hanker after a visit to Russell and the Bay of Islands. The news that Russell is not on a road will be a shock to a lot of people, but nevertheless the Far North is attracting an unusual number of motorists this season. The area south and west of the Waitomo Caves (Marakopa and Kinohaku) is inquired after a good deal, as is also the road to the Urewera Country. After seeing about 1,000 requests for itineraries, it can never be said that New Zealand motorists are stay-at-homes. Rather, they seem to be confirmed wanderers.
