A meeting is being called by the Mayor of Rotorua for the purpose of raising money to put the Mamaku Road in good order for this summer. A Main Highways Board subsidy of £4 for £1 has been promised. * • * The Rotorua- Taupo road lias been put in excellent order in anticipation of heavy tourist traffic. Extensive maintenance has been applied over almost the full length of 54 miles, and the road is a contrast to conditions which prevailed two years ago. Complaints that some service cars raced along the Great South Road near Hamilton at 40 to 50 miles an hour was made by Dr. F. D. Pinfold, at a meeting of the Hamilton agency executive of the Auckland Automobile Association. The Whangarei-Waipu main highwav has been closed for three and ahalf miles south of Oakleigh to permit of bitumen-sealing. Motorists will be required to use a section of the old clay road, where deviation signs have beert erected by the Auckland Automobile Association. The unmetalled road was in bird condition, but it is being improved with a grader. Difficulties will arise if bad weather is experienced. Assurance is given that the main highway will be open well before Christmas touring commences. * * * The Franklin branch of the A.A.A. has asked that signposts be erected on the new' deviation over the Razorback Hill, it being reported that the deviation* is being used by motorists. * • • The Matamata Town Board has accepted a tended for £1,535 for work on main highways within the town area. The total amount involved in the scheme to be undertaken is £6,400. A start has been made with metalling the Kaimai Road between Bay of Plenty and Waikato.
