Barney, the Orang-Outang Dies at the Zoo

The monkeys at the Auckland Zoo are in mourning . Barney the orang-outang is dead. No longer will he amuse the hundreds of 'visitors who daily surged round the orangoutang cage to watch the quaint antics of Barney and his wife. Barney was ill for some days and medical attention was obtained for him. Tic did not recover, however, and after his death a post-mortem examination icas made. It is believed that the orangoutang died from poisoning. Some ill-advised person had evidently given him a cigarette and the tobacco had caused his death. Mrs. Barney is a desolate looking creature since her husband died.. She sits most of the day with her arms ovgr her head, scarcely taking the slightest interest in her admirers and sympathisers.
