AUCKLAND RIDERS LEAVE FOR N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
P. BYRNES and J. H. Wade left by the Limited last night for Christchurch to compete in the New Zealand amateur cycling championships to be held at English Park Stadium on Friday and Saturday. Quite a number of racin cyclists were on the station to w i them good luck. yr r\- rS rH * but Hayes, unearthing a sprint that electrified the onlookers, flew down the finishing straight, gradually overhauling the tiring Pelham and got the verdict by a few inches. Gore finished four lengths back third. Lawler was close up fourth. It was a finish to be remembered by those who saw it. Both riders were warmly congr. tulated on their great finish. S. Hayes, the winner of Saturday's event, has no equal in New Zealand as a rider of grass tracks. His build lends itself to him handling these rough goings with comparative ease compared with many other riders. His riding on Saturday was the best Hayes Has ever done, and it is very questionable if ever he was as fit in his life as He is at present. H. Pelham, though beaten, was not disgraced. He can be depended on to keep Hayes busy every time they meet off any mark. J. V. Gore, who finished third, also was riding well; but lie took too much out of himself in trying to £et the lead to have a chance finishing well. LAST ROAD EVENT The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club tlosed its road racing season on Saturday with a 22-mile Time Trial and Sealed Handicap event. A good muster of riders took part and considering the strong wind blowing the times recorded were good. Contestants started at intervals and were not allowed to accept pace of any kind. This made the race a solid *v.ll-the-way grind, and found out many Weak riders, only eight finishing the bourse. H. .Dwight, the winner of the Time t’rial, put up a fine performance by Aiding the 22 miles in 61min. 52sec. This works out at over 21J miles an hour for the full distance, which must be put down as one of Dwight s best unpaced rides. M. P. Byrnes and J. H. Wade did not start. The following are the results: Sealed Handicap:—G. Hall, 7£min, 1; A. W. Pinker, 2min, 2; H. Russell, smin, 3. Time Trial:—H. Dwight, 61min. 52sec. 1. A. W. Pinker, 62min. sSsec. 2; S. Lichfield. t>4min. 29aec. 3; W. Dwight, 65mirt. 16sec. 4; H. Russell, 66min. 34 sec. 5; G. Hall, 67min. 17sec. 6. A FINE RIDE The winner of the Time Trial, H. Dwight, has put up some great times in this class of racing this season. He seems to go better alone than in company. On Saturday he set up a good solid 22 mile an hour gait and never once eased up till well in the last lap when he commenced to feel the effects of his hard ride. A. W. Pinker, who secured second fastest time, also went a good race. He is not noted as an unpaced rider, but Saturday's performance was his best this season in that style of racing. G. Hall, with a liberal allowance of Timin., won the Sealed Handicap. He also put up a good ride, finishing sixth in the Time Trial. A. W. Pinker and H. Russell, who were placed second and third in the handicap, were also second and fifth in the Trial.
