“Bolted and Barred Like Chinese Bank”
OPIUM ADDICT’S HOUSE POPPY DEVOTEE CONVICTED Ginn Buck, a Chinese, described as “an opium addict/’ pleaded guilty at the Auckland Police Court yesterday afternoon to a charge of having opium in his possession. He was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence in three week, time. Detective Sinclair informed the court that Ginn Buck’s house was bolted and barred like the Bank of China. There were 27 tins of opium in his possession. Mr. L. P. Leary, for Ginn Buck said that his client had been an opium addict for many years, and had spent his entire fortune on the drug. He suggested that some effort should be made to reclaim the man. "He had £. 10 in his possession when arrested,” said Mr. Leary, “and I would suggest that Ginn Buck should have some opportunity of spending this money on medical treatment rather than spend it as a fine.”
