UNIVERSITY COLLEGE MUSIC EXAMINATIONS
ABSENCE OF HONOURS SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES The half-yearly examinations of the j University College School of Music j were concluded on Thursday. Although there was an absence of : honours in most grades, Professor W. , E. Thomas, and Dr. S. Kenneth Phil- j lips, the examiners, reported that signs ; of careful teaching were not lacking. j In the diplomas, marks were lost i mostly for the poorness of scale and arpeggio playing, and lack of knowledge shown in the form and chords of the works performed. A surface knowledge of form and harmony was not sufficient to pass the examination. Throughout all the grades the sight - reading was poor. The interpretation of Bach was not always successful. In the part-playing there was a want of legato, and the inside parts were ragged. In most cases, Beethoven’s sonatas were well played. Refinement was lacking in the Chopin pieces, and the time in certain passages was too rigid and strict. The following are the results: PRACTICAL TESTS Fellowship of School of Music (pianoforte maximum 100, pass 75). —Vera Cogswell.
