FERTILE PLAINS LAID WASTE TOWN OF THE DEAD By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. PARIS, Thursday. M. Violette. a former GovernorGeneral of Algeria, states that the fertile plains of Oran are covered with from eight inches to twelve inches of mud, rendering the land useless for an indefinite period. He estimates that 250 Europeans and 2,500 natives are dead. The desolation caused is liardli’ imaginable. The flooded town of Perregaux has about it no sign of life, and dead bodies float on the muddy water. It is still raining.—A. and N.Z.
