PRISONER ESCAPES
LEAVES HOSPITAL AFTER TREATMENT SUFFERING FROM CRUSHED FOOT A prisoner from the Mount Eden Gaol, who was receiving treatment at the Auckland Hospital, disappeared this morning after he had received attention. He is William John Brydon, who is undergoing a sentence of five years’ imprisonment. Brydon is an habitual criminal. For some months past, Brydon, who was suffering from a crushed foot, had been going from the prison to the hospital for massage treatment. He walked on crutches, and was allowed a considerable amount of freedom. During his visits to the hospital he has probably been able to make friends, and perhaps arrange to make his escape. This morning Brydon went to the hospital as usual for his treatment, but since he left the hospital he has disappeared. He was last seen just before noon. It was stated that Brydon had been seen to throw away his crutches, but the prison authorities say that it would have been impossible for him to walk had he done so. Brydon is dressed in an ordinary brown suit of clothes, and is a man of medium build. If he has thrown his crutches away he will be walking with a limp. He came from Whangarei.
