MARRIAGES ARE NOT SOCIAL FUNCTIONS
Evening weddings are coming to be regarded as social functions rather than serious Christian ceremonies. From this point of view Archbishop Averill regretted some modern tendencies in an address to the annual festival of the Mothers’ Union yesterday.
The sacred vow of marriage, he said, was often looked on only as an element in social life and the Christian aspect was lost in the consideration of marriage as a social function. In the case

The ceremony was not a mere sop to convention, and if the solemnity of the service were ignored the Church might seek legislation to make all marriages civil ceremonies and retain the blessing of the Church for those who sincerely regarded their marriage as a «• natred. ceremouy* I
