Hauraki shaft is now 4utt below the 400 ft level aaid the permanent penthouse has been constructed and approved by ; the inspector of mines. The Cameron j sinking pump is below the penthouse and 1 easily dealing with the incoming water, and all necessary provision has been j made for the safe sinking of the shaft. The country rock continues of the same favourable nature as that met with where the rich ore was obtained in the upper levels. The cross reef, which is striking j towards the first reef expected to be met with, is dipping away from the vertiI cal and will soon be away from the shaft. The reef continues to carry heavy black mineralised pug on both walls which is a favourable indication for getting gold ; at its junction with another reef. It is expected to meet with the Xo. 7 reef at about 60ft below the 400 level, and, seeing that all the indications for gold are favourable, the prospect of getting gold in the Xo. 7 seems reasonable. The drive on the reef in the seaward face of the 400 ft level is now within 15ft of the estimated junction with the Green Harp reef and directly under where the famous patch of that name was got in the early days. The reef being driven on is from 6in to 9in in width, and so far has not been identified, but is the same course as the black reef of the Union Beach fame. Crosscutting towards the Hauraki North section has been resumed.”
MOUNT WELCOME. —The manager reports: “Since the last report work has been resumed in No. 2 level, where the water is lowering about sft per week and is now 30ft below the level. The winze should be dry before Christmas. In the meantime we are working the southern end of the winze to pick up the run of gold which could not be worked last summer owing to the water being too high. In the quartz broken down to-day some good colours of gold showed up and about four shifts’ work should bring us on to some good stone, as gold was left in the stope floor above this point. ’
