Sails Spread in Good Sou’ Wester

TAKAPUNA CLUB RACES CRUISING AND HARBOUR EVENTS THE second series of yacht races of the season was sailed on Saturday in a good south-west breeze. The events were under the control j of the Takapuna Boating Club on this j occasion and consisted of cruising races jto Awaroa Bay, Waiheke, for keei ! classes and mullet boats, and harbour I races for all craft from Class M downj ward. Owing to insufficent entries no launch j races were held. ' The course for the cruising races i was from the starting line between Stanley Point and a launch moored south off the point, thence direct to the destination. The harbour races were sailed from the starting line off Stanley Point, thence round red light beacon off Bayswater, thence round buoy below Watchman Island, thence round Rona buoy off Birkenhead and back to starting line. Craft of all classes except the 12ft. 6in. Takapuna Z class, contested two rounds of the course, the latter going once round only. At the conclusion of the cruising race ; the crews took part in an enjoyable j nance at Awaroa Bay. The officials in charge of the racing were: Starter and timekeeper, harbour i races, Mr. W. A. Wilkinson; judge. : Mr. F. Fortzer: judge, cruising races, j Mr. P. G. Easson: timekeepers, Messrs C. H. Hoverd and L. J. Peters CRUISING RACES Classes H, L and N.—Nine boats started in this race for mullet boats and all got away in fairly close formation. Wairere was first to cross the line, to be followed immediately by Spray, Lovelight, Marie. Starlock, Venus and Awatere. Off Dpvonport the order was the same. The fleet made a fine picture as it ran down harbour off the strong south-wester. Winifred came along seven minutes later and Celox, which had blown out her , mainsail, 45 minutes after gun fire. The j direction of the wind gave a good run down harbour, and most boats immediately set spinnakers. At Devonport i Spray was leading. Awatere rapidly ! overhauled the foremost contestants and j left all behind except Spray, which sailed | into Awaroa 4 sec. ahead of Awatere. The ! finishing times were:—Spray, 4h 51m 28s; Awatere, 4h 51m 325: Starlock, 4h 53m 555; Marie, 4h 55m 595: Venus, 4h 59m 265; Wairere. 5h 3m 11s; Lovelight, 5h 3m 12s; Winifred, 5h 32m 15s; Celox, 5h 43m 60s. Result: Spray, 1; Marie, 2; Awatere, 3. Only Is separated Marie and Spray on corrected times, and Awatere lost second place by 2s. Classes B, C and E.—Only three boats started in this race. Rangi crossed the line 50 yards ahead of Moutere, which in turn lead Mahoe by 20 yai'ds. This order was maintained to Devonport. Ladye Wilma got in trouble before the race and came along very late and , did not actually cross the starting line. : Rangi maintained her early advantage to j the destination. The finishing times were: j Rangi, 5h lm Is; Moutere, 5h 12m 9s; j Ma.hoe, oh 21m Is; Ladye Wilma, 5h 23m. Result: Moutere. 1; Rangi. 2. HARBOUR RACES Classes M, V, S and Star. Time of starting, 3 p.m. Leveret lead the five contestants over the line. Mawhiti came next, followed closely by Magic and Countess, with Drone well astern of the field. All were in close order as they legged up harbour to the Bayswater light. Rival.started 10 minutes late, but gained somewhat before the others had reached the Watchman mark. At the starting mark commencing the second time round Mawhiti was well in the lead, her time at this stage being 3h 43m 41s. Drone came round next at 3h 47m 10s. Mistral was third at 3h 49m Bs. Magic then turned at 3h 50m 10s, with Leveret fifth at 3h 51m Sss. Rival turned up at 4h 8m os, and withdrew from the race. Mawhiti arrived home first at 4h 30m 50s. Drone came in second at 4h 37m 50s. Mistral followed at 4h 40m Is. The final placings were: Mawhiti. 4h 30m 50s; Mistral, 4h 34m Is. No third place was allowed. YACHTING Classes T. X and Y.—Starting time, 3.S I p.m. A close and picturesque start was witnessed in this contest, which attracted some of the keenest skippers of 14-foot-ers. Linnet showed the way across, with Marie close and Kismet next in attendance, with Romp last. At the first mark all were bunched in keen rivalry. On the run back to the starting mark Kismet led the way comfortably from Marie, her time being 4h lm 255. Marie came along at 4h 2m 12s, with Romp at 4h 11m Is. Linnet, which “gambled on the wrongtack.’* came at 4h 12m 50s. Kismet completed the course first at 4h 55m 55s Marie camejn next at 4h 57m 545. Romp arrived at 5h 8m 14s. The boats were placed in that order. Z Class.—Starting time, 3.15 p.m. The Takapuna class attracted five contestants for the race, which was once round the harbour course. Comet got the the start, to be followed eloselv bv Kfity. Delphine, Nimrod and Quatea. Comet, which led all round the course finished winner 4h 15m 255. Delphine came along at 4h 19m 21s. and Kitty at 4h 2t*m Ss. The corrected times were: Comet. 4h 14m 355; Delphine, 4h ISm 21s No third place was awarded.
