BANQUET AT TAKAPUNA

CLUB'S YEAR CLOSES About 40 members and guests of the Young People’s Society of St. George's Presbyterian Church. Takapuna, attended a banquet in the school hall on Saturday evening. This meeting closed the winter season. The hall was tastefully decorated with streamers of various hues, among which blue, the representative Presbyterian colour, predominated. Several balloons hovered above the table. After a short introductory speech, the president, the Rev. M. Richards, proposed the toast of “The Church.” This was followed by the singing of the -3rd psalm. Miss 11. Seth-Smith replied. Other toasts included that of the “Young People’s Society,” proposed by Mr. J. Lewis, to which Miss D. Harrison replied; the “Visitors,” Mr. W. Clark (Mr. J. Ahfeld); the “Spinsters,” Mr. A. Richards (Miss D. Somerville); Uie “Bachelors,” Miss N. Howie (Mr. W. Rushbrook); and the “Press,” Mr. C. Richards (>lr. K. Gunn).

Items during - the evening were as follow: Duet, Misses, F. Walker and .7. Clark; elocution, Mr. K. Gunn and Mr. G. Suckling; song. Mr. W. Rushbrook; pianoforte solo, Miss M. Brooks. Apologies were received from several members, including Mr, A. S. Boyd, one of the vice-presidents. PENWOMEN ENTERTAINED Mrs. Mary Stuart Boyd entertained members of the League of New Zealand Penwomen at her home, “Rawhiti,” Takapuna, on Saturday. Games and competitions were played and a “fortune-teller” foretold fame for the writers. Afternoon tea was served in the sitting-rooms and on the verandah. EPSOM GARDEN FAIR A fair was held in the garden of Mrs. Alfred Kidd, Gillie’s Avenue, Epsom, on Saturday afternoon, in aid of the Auckland Theosophical Society Building Fund. The garden was a mass of colour and the stalls were decorated with streamers. Pastoral dancing by the pupils of Madame Edith Baird and the orchestral music played during the afternoon were much appreciated. The stalls were in charge of the following ladies: Work stall, Mrs. Hyams, Mrs. Peers, M.rs. Key and Miss Peers; produce stall, Mrs. Cooper; flower stall, Mrs. Malcolm, Mrs. Tilley; cake stall, Mrs. Carey, Mrs. James, Mrs. Goldsmith; sweet stall. Miss Young, Miss Darroch, Miss Farmer; fancy stall, Mrs. Heather, Mrs. Trevithick; afternoon tea, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Brody. CHARITY CONCERT Mrs. Cyril Towsey organised a very successful concert in St. Benedict’s Hall last evening in aid of the Mater Misericordiae Public Hospital Building Fund. The artists who assisted in the fine programme were: Mr. S. Pritchard, Mr. M. Roy Dormer, Mr. Alan McElwain, Mr. J. F. Montague, Mrs. Cyril Towsey. Miss Ina Thomson, Miss Maida Hooker, Miss Lalla Hemus, Miss Phyllis Torpey, Miss Duncan, Miss Atkins and an instrumental trio, including Mrs. Robertson, Miss Olive Lloyd, and Mr. Norman Watson. Mr. Cyril Towsey acted as accompanist. SNOWY-WHITE TENNIS SHOES Canvas tennis shoes can be given a snowy whiteness if blue water be used to wet the cleaning preparation.
