NEW REGENT

“ROLLED STOCKINGS” “Rolled Stockings,” which is now being shown at the New Regent Theatre, takes place for the most part in and around the campus of a wellknown Californian university. The pep, enthusiasm, and life usually connected with collegians is there. An exciting boat race provides a big kick at the finish. Pretty co-eds and handsome undergraduates run riot throughout the story, and advance reports tell us that those who enjoyed the initial “youth” comedy will go into raptures over “Rolled Stockings.” James Hall is the philandering, gambling, flirting collegian, who gets in and out of scrapes with gay abandon. Richard Arlen is his sturdier, quieter brother, whose ambition is to shine in college athletics. lie shines, too, as a stroke in the race. Louise Brooks’s brunette beauty fits into the surroundings so perfectly that you cannot help sympathising with any youngster who idolises her. Nancy Phillips, a vibrant, young blonde, and a newcomer to the screen, gives an effective portrayal as a peppy sorority sister. Fi J ed Curran, the well-known English comedian, makes an immediate hit with the audiencei n his latest comic songs. Nor is there any doubt of the popularity of Eddie Horton at the Wurlitzer. The Regent Orchestra, under Mr. Maurice Gutteridge, is ail an orchestra should be with the additional feature of being in itself a musical treat.
