TAUMARUNUI BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL At the regular fortnightly meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council, the foreman, Mr. A. Oldham, submitted a report dealing with the fit-ting-up of a motor-tourists’ camping ground in the borough, on the Wanganui River bank esplanade, south of the recreation ground. The estimated cost was £2B 8s 3d, and the Mayor, Mr. G. E. Manson. in moving that the site for camping be fitted up at a cost of not more than £2O, said the estimate was a little too much to spend lor the purpose. After several councillors had disapproved of the motion on the ground that the setting apart of a camping site would affect the boardinghouse keepers in the town, the motion was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor. A communication was received from the Chamber of Commerce regarding the deadlock that has arisen in connection with a stock route to the railway trucking yards, the Railway Department refusing to do anything, and the borough council not having the legal power. The chamber suggested that an alternative route be set aside for stock, or that the council spread the present road with metal. It was decided to urge the chamber to press the Railway Department to remove the cattle yards to the land set aside lor the purpose at Matapuna. A report by the electrical engineer, Mr. H. F. McLeod, regarding slight contamination of the Rangaroa water supply, stated this was possibly due to the purifying chemicals being inefficiently introduced into the water. The power station engineer, Mr. G. R. Wilton, having tendered his resignation owing to returning to England, it was resolved to grant him a testimonial wilder the borough seal. Cr. R. B. Robb wrote tendering his resignation and it was decided to accept with regret. Cr. Robb is leaving for Palmerston North.
