PAINTED COSTUMES FOR BATHING
SUITS DECORATED WITH FISH AND SHELLS Painted bathing suits are among the new ideas for the seaside girl. Many of the bathing costumes of to-morrow which are being packed for Deauville, the Lido and other fashionable places show painted decorations —sometimes merely painted borders, sometimes elaborate pictures. Waterproof paint is used for putting on the new trimming, so that if by chance the costume gets wet no damage is done. Technically, of course, such costumes are more for the bathing girl who "bathes” on the sands. Many of these costumes have marine designs on them. A most striking sea suit was of sea-green silk, and had two huge fish painted on the front of it. Another bathing toilette showed a plain costume and cap with a cloak which was painted all over with various sorts of fish. Some of the prettiest of the new painted costumes have designs of seaweed, seashells and sea anemones. An apricot-coloured costume with these worked into a wide border which appeared on various parts of the costume was very attractive. At the everyday end of the idea is the bathing suit which shows a modest painting on the bodice part—just a couple of small fish twisted into the wearer’s monogram, for example. A CROCHET TIP It is often difficult to crochet directly on to a heavy or closely-woven material. Place an unthreaded coarse needle in the sewing machine, and then run around the edge to be crocheted. The line of holes that is made will ensure the work being done evenly and quickly. Moreover, the ease with which the crochet hook is inserted makes it less likely that the edge will fray.
