FAIR AT MILFORD
FUNDS FOR BOAT HARBOUR The raising of funds to improve the boat harbour in the Wairau Estuary was the object of a grand fair held yesterday in the Picturedrome, Milford, by the Milford Cruising Club. It is hoped to attract boat owners of the Ponsonby and Victoria Clubs, who have lately lost their wintering quarters, and who will make Milford the headquarters for their boats. The fair was opened at 2.30 p.m. by the Mayor of Takapuna, Mr. J. W. Williamson. A large Christmas tree in the centre of the hall bore gifts for all the children. Stalls ranged round the walls had been lent by the Takapuna Boating Club, some of the members of which assisted. A cooking demonstration arranged by the Waitemata Power Board utilised flour and other ingredients donated by the various firms, the products being sold for the benefit of the club. Music was given by the Municipal Band and a jazz orchestra.
Prizes in the competitions and raffles were awarded as follow: Miss W. Betteridge, purse; Mrs. M. Kember, doll; Mrs. Taylor and Miss G. Hooker, cakes; Mrs. Heard and Mrs. Baxter tied for a ham. A baby show resulted as follows: Under 9 months, Bobbie Whiteside (6 months); under 18 months, Desmond Hicks (16 months); consolation prize, Albert Hallford (2 months). The raffle for a Tauranga class yacht has been extended for another two weeks and will be drawn early next month.
