CROWDED RECEPTION

“You asked us to come ir. out of the wet, and have a cup of tea, and what could have been more typical of hospitality to any Britisher than that?” asked the Right Hon. L. S. Amery of the crowd who attended the reception given in honour of Mr. and M rs. Amery at Ellerslie yesterday. THE simple little question came in x amusing response to the fulsome welcomes that had been extended by a quick succession of speakers to Mr. Amery. Speeches that dwelt on Mr. Amery’s life work and personal occomplishments—speeches that touched lightly upon his prowess at athletics—speeches that told of all the hundred different things he had done in all his varied capacities, including that of First Lord of the Admiralty—all these and a multitude of other eulogies were poured out upon Mr. Amery, apd his rep l was all the more charming for its simplicity. In a few words he spoke of the interest that he took in the work of the various bodies who were responsible for the reception, and referred to his pleasure in being in New Zealand and among folk who gave so lavish’- of their welcome and their hospitality. * Mrs. Amery, who was presented with a delightful sheaf of roses, also spoke of her gratitude for the cordial welcome that had been given her and thanked the members of the Victoria League, the Navy League, the Royal Colonial Institute, the Overseas Club and the League of Nations for their kindness in arranging so delightful a reception. Like all good wives, she said, she allowed her husband to make the public speeches, though what she did in the way of talking in private was a rather different affair. The kiosk was delightfully decorated with pink gjadioli, sweet peas and purple irises on the long tables and graceful potted palms arranged around the room. The table at which Mr. and Mrs. Amery and their party sat was! decked with pink roses, while over the centre was suspended a great letter “A.” composed of tightly massed crimson roses. The speakers included Miss J. A. Mowbray, Mr. John Alexander and Professor Worley. Mrs. Amery wore a patterned frock of beige and navy blue crepe de chine with a tiered skirt.
