MUNICIPAL CHOIR

SATURDAY'S CONCERT Good training and more than a passing knowledge of the works in hand characterised the performance of the Municipal Choir, which, under the direction of Mr. Maughan Barnett, city organist, provided the nucleus of a very enjoyable entertainment at the Town Mall on Saturday evening. The choir numbers were: “When Flow’ry Meadows’* (Palestrina). “The Prince of Sleep” (Elgar), “After Many a Dusty Mile” (Elgar), “The Nightingale” (Mendelssohn), “On Himalay” (Bantoclv), “The Standard on the Braes O’ Mar” (Bantock), and Barnby’s “Sweet and Low.” Mr. Maughan Barnett’s organ solos provided additional enjoyment and were warmly received. His numbers were I-landel’s “Concerto” No. 6, Bach’s “Gavotte in B Minor,” “Morceau de Concert” (Hollins), “Chinoiseries” (Surnnen) and an old English air, “The Carman’s Whistle.” Violin solos by Miss Ina Bos worth, which included the Brahms-Hochstein “Valse,” Sarasate’s “Romanza Andaluza,” and a Danish melody by Percy i Grainger, proved very enjoyable, recalls being demanded. Mr. Birrell O’Malley also made a very pleasing impression in the tenor solos, “At Dawning” (Cadman) and the Rigoletto number, “La Donna e Mobile.” Mr. Leo Whittaker was the accompanist. MUNICIPAL BAND A concert given by the Municipal Band in the Town Hall last evening attracted a large attendance. An interesting programme by the band comprised the overture “Zampa” (Herold), and two marches, “Givenchy” (Karius) and “Cumberland” (Saville). Three dances from “Henry VIII.” (German) were also played, and the programme concluded with a selection, “Sullivan Operas” (Dan Godfrey). Two solos were also contributed, a cornet solo, “A Dream of Love” (Haydn-Millar), by Mr. F. Bowes, and a flute solo, “Song Without Words” (Clinton), by Mr. Hal C. McLennan.
