GILBERT AND SULLIVAN OPERA Great interest is being invested in the approaching season of the J. C. Williamson Ltd. Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera season, which begins on Saturday night next,' when the exquisite comic opera* “Ruddigore” will be staged for the.first time in Auckland. Only three evening performances can be staged of “Ruddigore” and there will be a special matinee on Wednesday afternoon, November 30. “The Mikado” will be presented on Wednesday and Thursday nights, November 30 and December 1, and “Patience” on Friday and Saturday evenings and on Saturday afternoon, December 3 and 3. On Monday, December 5, “The Yeoman of the Guard” will be staged and on Tuesday, December 6, “lolanthe” will be revived. On Wednesday, afternoon and evening, December 7, “The Gondoliers” will be performed and on Tuesday, December S, “H.M.S. Pinafore” will be produced. On Friday, December, 9,.“Princess Ida” will be revived and the season will close with two productions of “The Pirates of Penzance” on Saturday. December 10. The operas will be interpreted by J. C. Williamson’s speciallyorganised Comic Opera Company, which contains such well-known artists as Strella Wilson, James Hay, Charles Walenn, John Ralston, Patti Russell. Winifred Williamson, Bernard Manning. The scenery and mountings of “Ruddigore” are described as magnificent, and the dresses are varied and handsome. The first act is supposed to take place at the picturesque fishing village of Red Herring, in Cornwall and the second in the great picture gallery of Ruddigore Castle. The music of this new-old opera is described as well up to the usual Sullivan standard, and the book is one of the wittiest of Gilbert's efforts. “Ruddigore” will be staged for three nights. Prices will be as usual, and the box plans for the season will be opened at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd., on Thursday morning next at nine o’clock. A queue will be formed from 8 a.m.
