Rivalry Between Directors is Keen in Prize Contest
piVALRY grows keen between Paramount directors as the time approaches for the awarding of three big prizes by Paramount executives for the best pictures of 1927. When Paramount Theatre opened in New York at the close of 1926 Para- - mount officials announced that three [ awards would be given the directors 5 of the best pictures shown at the i theatre during; its first year, i To the director of the picture given first place a gold medal and 10,000 3 dollars in cash will be given. Second I place wins 5,000 dollars, and third . 2,500 dollars. The judges are Adolph j Zukor, president of Paramount, Jesse l L. Lasky, first vice-president, Sidney R. Kent, general manager, and Sam Katz, head of Publix Theatres, Inc., t the Paramount chain. s The prizes are awarded on the basis v of box office success, picture quality, s performance and general appeal. “Underworld,” directed by Josef von 1 Sternberg, “Hotel Imperial,” with Pola o Negri, and “Hula.” with Clara Bow i lead at present. Each of these packed s the theatre to capacity for a sevenn day run. None of these is assured it _ will hold its place until the end of the year.
