SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY

IN AID OF CHURCH FAIR A most successful afternoon was given by Mrs. V. Morrin and Miss Carson at their residence, Otahuhu, yesterday afternoon. The proceeds of the function were in aid of the toy stall at the Parish Fair, which is to be held at the end of the month. There was a large attendance of members of the church and their friends, and a pleasant time was spent in playing outdoor games and cards. Clock golf and target croquet were indulged in on the lawns, and after some very close play, Mrs. Drake won the former and Mrs. Phillips secured the first prize in the croquet competition, with Miss Wingate second. Ping pong, target games and quoits held sway outside, and were the centre of much interest all afternoon. The spacious drawing and sitting rooms were arranged for cards and presented a charming appearance with their masses of brilliantly-coloured Iceland poppies and carnations. During the afternoon a “500” tournament was held, of which Mrs. Cowper was the winner and Mesdames Munro and McFarlane were awarded consolation honours. Dainty afternoon tea and ices were served on the lawn and in the card rooms by the hostesses, who were assisted by a number of friends. The Rev. C. B. W. Seton was present, and expressed his pleasure at seeing such a large attendance, and thanked the hostesses for their very kindly hospitality. Musical items were given by Miss Arlington, violin solo, and Mrs. Walters, vocal solo. Miss Rita Burnside acted as accompanist. Mrs. V. Morrin and Miss Carson welcomed the guests, the former wearing a dainty frock of iris mauve crepe do chine, with vest and facings of primrose georgette, and crinoline hat with trimmings to tone. Miss Carson wore a smart frock of moss crepe de chine, daintily trimmed with ecru shades, and hat to match.
